Start With The End In Mind: Why Social Media SMART Goals Are The Center Of A Sound Strategy

by | Mar 4, 2022 | Analytics, Digital Marketing, Social Media Strategy

Ever heard someone talking about their goals and had that lightbulb moment where you realize they’re actually talking about their dreams, hopes and all that fuzzy stuff?

That person needs SMART goals. Because a goal without a plan is about as effective as wishing on your birthday cake. (Though for the record, I still do that.)

At Oh Snap! Social, we are all about setting goals the SMART way. We’re strategists, not dreamers. We’re business people, not wishy-washy romantics. (Okay, maybe we’re romantics, but not at work.) Our content is light-hearted and fun, but it’s also built on some super-SMART scaffolding.

Wait, what are social media SMART goals, exactly?

We’re not just capitalizing it for emphasis. SMART is a fancy acronym that stands for:

  • Specific
  • Measurable
  • Achievable
  • Relevant
  • Time-Bound

Basically, we want to make sure that everything we want to do is doable within a set time-frame…and also relevant to what we’re trying to achieve for a client.

(Because eating a bar of chocolate a day might be measurable and time-bound…but maybe not super-relevant unless you work for Hershey.)

So, let’s say our goal is to gather 50 new lead emails within a two-week period.

That statement is specific and measurable (50 new leads) relevant and time-bound (new leads in two weeks), and it’s achievable – 50 leads? Pfft! It gives us clear metrics for success, and lets us plan how to get there. Also this means as a business owner, you’re thinking beyond the follower count!

It’s way different from saying “we want to grow our readership”, which means…pretty much nothing.

Bonus: SMART goals let you plan.

We love the future over here at Oh Snap! Social. We live for it. Every single strategy we implement is designed with our clients’ futures in mind and the business objectives and goals taking center stage. We want to make sure we’re helping you spend your time and effort in the right places, and that we’re setting real and reasonable outcomes for those efforts – so that you can keep on building your business.

Sure, those long-term horizons matter, and we take those into account too. But we also hit pause every month so that we can crunch the data and run the numbers on the past four weeks to identify what to reset, refocus or extend our strategy. And while we there? We log some new SMART goals. Because moving the goalposts? It’s how you go from good to great.
